It was a brilliant start to our meal with the Benny. Breaking open the two impeccably poached eggs sitting on top allowed the exceptionally runny yolk to dribble down onto a generous helping of pulled pork. The pulled pork was absolutely divine, so juicy and tender, generously coated with a sweet, sticky helping of barbecue sauce that was neither overwhelming nor overly sweet, allowing the beautiful pork flavour to shine. Sitting at the bottom were two potato croquettes, with a satisfying, crunchy outer and almost fluffy, creamy inner. This was separated by a bed of crisp pickled cabbage and held together with a spicy Sirarcha bernaise that most definitely turned up heat and spice. A thoroughly delicious dish characterised by bold, unrelentless flavours and amazing balance. Delicious.
Contrasting the strong flavours of the eggs Benny was our Smashed Avocado. The lightly seasoned smashed Avi was beautifully fresh and creamy. This was accompanied by the aromatic, exceptionally tasty dukkah spices liberally scattered throughout. All served on crunchy sourdough and topped with fresh cherry tomatoes as well as a lovely macadamia feta that seriously tasted like the real deal made with diary, this humble smashed avo was anything but ordinary.
Unfortunately the prettiest dish of them all impressed us the least in terms of taste. The Dorayaki Pancakes looked absolutely outstanding, stacked high. exceptionally thick and topped with scoop of pistachio gelato. Unfortunately the pancakes aren’t quite as fluffy as we hoped, and the banana butter filling within didn’t quite provide enough flavour or sweetness. While nothing was bad per se, the dish could’ve done with more intense flavours and juxtaposing textures overall, as it definitely fell short in satisfying our sweet craving.
As a newly opened cafe in the trendy Fitzroy that’s quite off the beaten track, Cafe Louis does have its work cut out for it.
Despite how the menu may read, their dishes are far from ordinary and our savoury dishes most certainly impressed in more ways than one. For an extraordinary brunch experience, this is definitely worth a shot!
