- Toro Sashimi
The Scampi was stunningly presented, decorated with a whole prawn head and lettuce. Unfortunately the only edible part was of course the body itself which wasn’t quite as sizeable. The scampi itself was pleasant, though it’s flavour was masked by the lemon juiciest drizzled over, thereby ruining the true flavours of the fresh scampi itself.
The Toro, Tuna Belly, was disappointing to say the least. A small, paper-thin slice of tuna belly topped the nigiri. While the size definitely left much to be desired (this was a DOUBLE portion mind you!), the quality of the fish was much worse. One slice offered up a bitter aftertaste while another had a bone-like object within. The sushi rice was also extremely glucky and gooey, and definitely far from the fragrant, vinegar soaked Jasmine that you’d expect.
Charging premium prices for subpar quality ingredients never sits well with the penguin, and Sushi Jiro has done just that. You might as well get a mass produced sushi roll from a takeaway stand and it’d still be better than this.
Would Penguin Eat Again?
Make-pretend Japanese sushi train that’s run by a Chinese crew who have no appreciation for the art of making sushi, this is the place to avoid.
Penguineats dined complimentary of Box Hill Central.
